Peak Oil

Oil is the essence of modern life.  Everything in our western culture depends upon the easy availability of cheap, plentiful oil.  But, oil is a finite resource.

·        World-wide we consume over 30 billion barrels of oil per year and demand is increasing.

·        Globally, we now discover only one barrel of oil for every six that we use.

·        Despite what we hear about ‘oil substitutes’, there is currently no product in development that is as cheap, versatile and easily-transportable as oil.

Is the world running out of oil? No.  But we are (or soon will be) producing oil at its maximum rate of extraction.  That means that economic growth will stagnate and global disputes (wars!) over the remaining oil resources will become more likely.

Climate Change

The Copenhagen Conference highlighted the seriousness of Climate Change.  It is now universally recognised by scientists, politicians, world leaders, academics, businessmen and celebrities!  It is in the mainstream media on a daily basis.

We all know that we need to cut our carbon emissions but, at the same time, we hear of great new discoveries and technologies which will allow us to extract oil and gas from shale, tar sands and deep water.  Do we really want to do this?  What about the energy and natural resources it takes to extract and process these fossil fuels which will only, in turn, exacerbate the problem of Climate Change?

The Transition Model

Is it a hopeless situation?  Of course not.  Life will go on, but in a fundamentally different way from what it is today.

·        Globalism will give way to localisation.

·        Energy, transport and food production will become decentralised.

·        The commuter culture will disappear.

·        Consumerism will be scaled down.

·        People will learn new skills and old skills will be revived.

Does this frighten you or motivate, enthuse and inspire you?

The Transition Movement is a positive approach to meeting the challenges of the coming decades.  It addresses the fundamental issues of:

·        Reducing our waste, reusing,  and recycling

·        Localising food production and supporting our local farmers

·        Creating more local jobs

·        Making our streets more pedestrian and cycle friendly

·        Eliminating unnecessary traffic

·        Campaigning for and encouraging the switch to greener energy technology

The Transition Movement has clout!  There are now Transition towns, cities and villages all over the country (and the world) which gives it greater credibility as a moving force when dealing with local authorities, planning departments and even parliament!
