Physiotherapy

Physiotherapy plays an important part in the lives of students at Penhurst School.

Each student is assessed by a physiotherapist and a programme of stretching, mobility exercises and activities to develop independence is drawn up according individual needs. The focus is on maintaining a good range of joint movement, reducing spasticity in tight muscles, and promoting the development of fine and gross motor skills.

SEC_PEN_Standing.JPGAt present we have a staff of two physiotherapists and four assistants, who work chiefly in the classroom enabling students to access the curriculum. This may be by helping a student to actively participate in a task, position them into special seating or standing frame or assist with walking to the next lesson sometimes using the support of a walking frame.

The physiotherapy team is also involved in assisting with PE and Hydrotherapy sessions and drawing up lesson plans in conjunction with class teachers.

With advice from the physiotherapy team, they also help with posture control by positioning students in special seating, night lying supports and with fitting orthoses.

Physiotherapy support services

Orthotics

Many of the students require support from special footwear, splints and spinal supports. We are fortunate in that we have a visit each month from an experienced orthotist from the Nuffield Orthopaedic Centre in Oxford (NOC), who is able to offer advice on required equipment, measure for and supply new shoes, custom made Ankle/ Foot orthoses and other supports.

Wheelchairs

Each of our students uses a wheelchair and some require additional postural support or custom built seating.  We are fortunate in that we have access to the Posture Independence and Mobility Service (PIMS) in Oxford, a centre of excellence for seating and postural management.

Students are seen for seating assessments and wheelchair replacements by members of the PIMS team in conjunction with our physiotherapist. Repairs and maintenance to chairs is carried out on site at Penhurst by our local approved repairer G, Keep

Orthopaedics

Students’ orthopaedic needs are overseen by two Paediatric Orthopaedic surgeons from the Nufield Orthopaedic Centre.

  • Mr Jeremy Fairbank holds a termly clinic at Penhurst to monitor the students' spines. Students are reviewed yearly or more often if required. Those with postural problems or developing curvature may be prescribed spinal jackets or surgery for the more severe problems.

  • Mr Tim Theologis oversees other orthopaedic conditions in his clinic in Oxford.

Training

Staff at Penhurst work as part of a close team. To ensure best Physiotherapy practise and knowledge in safe manual handling throughout the school, the Physiotherapy department delivers an ongoing training programme to all staff. Topics includes: Stretching and Movement of Limbs. Use and Fitting of Orthoses, Manual handling, Hoisting, Chest Therapy and Hydrotherapy.
