Penhurst
has been on the same site since 1904. In that time it has moved from
an orphanage to a school for homeless children. It then became a
school for children with handicaps (sic). In the 60s it became a
school for children with physical disabilities and most recently,
since the early 90s, it has been a school for children with profound
and multiple learning difficulties. For many years the locals used to
call it the 'omes'. Currently we have 24 young people with up to 160
full, part-time and casual staff supporting the education and care of
these children and young people.
Since 2005 we
have spent £2 million on building projects and currently fundraising
towards a new residential home as we move into our period of
expansion.
