Drugs and Alcohol

The Oxfordshire Drug and Alcohol Action Team is one of 149 DAATs throughout England whose role is to implement and co-ordinate the Government’s National Drug Strategy.

This is an open access service for adults seeking help with drug and/or alcohol problems who live within Oxford City. An assessment service is also offered for those who think they need treatment for their drug problem.

Their web site contains a lot of informtion about the services they offer.

They can be contacted on: 01865 723500 (24 hour answerphone)

Alcoholics Anonymous

Alcoholics Anonymous is a fellowship of men and women who share their experience, strength and hope with each other that they may solve their common problem and help others to recover from alcoholism.

The only requirement for membership is a desire to stop drinking. There are no dues or fees for A.A. membership; we are self-supporting through our own contributions. A.A. is not allied with any sect, denomination, politics, organization or institution; does not wish to engage in any controversy; neither endorses nor opposes any causes. Our primary purpose is to stay sober and help other alcoholics to achieve sobriety.

AA hold weekly (no smoking) meetings in Chipping Norton, on Thursdays. The meetings are held at the Highlands Daycare Centre, 73 Burford Road, at 7.00pm.

You can either go along and introduce yourself, or you can telephone the AA helpline in Oxford 01865 242373 who will arrange for someone local to call you and go to the meeting with  you. They advise that the first meeting of the month is not suitable for first-timers, and if you want to go along with a friend or relative, then the meeting on the last Thursday of the month is 'open' - which means non-alcoholics may attend.

The Oxford helpline is manned 24 hours a day offering support and guidance. There are also regular meetings in Witney, Banbury, Burford and Oxford, as well as further afield - the AA website or Oxford helpline (01865 242373) can give more details.
