1:1 sessions

SEC_PEN_1 to 1.JPGStudents have weekly sessions with the Speech and Language Team  working on their Individual Learning Plan targets. This includes Intensive Interaction sessions, working on the computer and other switch activities as well as working on individual communication systems e.g. PECS, PCS symbols, photos etc.  We work very closely with the Occupational Therapist to tailor therapy to each  students individual needs.

Group sessions

SEC_PEN_Symbol03.jpgWe have a weekly session called ‘Lingo for the Lads’  which students attend. In this session the students work on their communication skills using symbols or auditory scanning techniques and also practice using their switches on the computer.

What else do we do?

As well as the regular sessions with the students we:

  • work with other support staff to carry out assessments that enable us to set realistic targets for the students;

  • monitor students eating and drinking skills;

  • produce communication books/systems tailored to individual students needs;

Supporting the staff

A principle part of our role at the school is to support the already very highly skilled staff. Staff training is offered about once every half term, and topics covered include eating and drinking, total communication, basic signing and using switches.
